摘要

The present study describes a new dinoflagellatagenus, Barrufeta Sampedro et S. Fraga gen. nov., with\udone new species, B. bravensis Sampedro et S. Fraga\udsp. nov., isolated from the Costa Brava (NW Mediter-\udranean Sea). The dinoflagellate was characterized at\udthe genus and species levels by LM and EM; LSU and\udinternal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA sequences;\udand HPLC analyses of the pigments, fatty acids, and\udpossible presence of toxins of several cultured\udstrains. The new Barrufeta species is oval shaped (22–\ud35 lm long and 16–25 lm wide) and dorsoventrally\udflattened. It possesses numerous small chloroplasts\udthat radiate from two large, equatorially located pyre-\udnoids and is a typical peridinin-containing dinoflagel-\udlate. The nucleus is in the anterior part of the\udepicone. The apical groove has a characteristic\ud‘‘Smurf-cap’’ shape that runs counterclockwise on the\udepicone and terminates on its right posterior part.\udB. bravensis is similar to the previously described spe-\udcies Gyrodinium resplendens Hulburt in its external\udmorphology but the original report of the latter\udlacked a description of the complete shape of the\udapical groove. It is therefore likely that some of\udthe G. resplendens species reported in the literature\udare Barrufeta since they possess a Barrufeta-type apical\udgroove. Fatty acids of Barrufeta were more similar to\udthose of Karenia brevis than those obtained from\udother unarmored analyzed species including three\udspecies of Gymnodinium and Akashiwo sanguinea
